FROM THE ASHES

Blyth Gallery, Imperial College

21 March - 4 May 2018

First born as an extension of the spring issue of Phoenix, From the Ashes celebrates the black and female forms using aesthetic media to appreciate the adversity these groups have overcome. Art is a medium that reflects, and sometimes instigates, social change. Today art is once again taking on new forms and, more importantly, new voices. Voices that weren’t once at the forefront are now screaming, singing, writing, painting, creating in protest.

And this statement couldn’t have been more true or de nos jours after the events that have led up to the opening of “From the Ashes”. On the day of the hanging, three pieces of work were asked to be taken down from the exhibition by Imperial College London as they were deemed “too inappropriate” - an exhibition originally curated to simply showcase art as meaningful protest, becomes a protest by its very existence. In response to these requests, myself and the other artist whose work was asked to be removed, ceremoniously censored our own work at the gallery opening.
